"I want to start posting but I don't know what to talk about."
"I want to start posting but I don't know what to talk about."
A guest in the crowd asked that exact question when I was on a panel at Boston University last month. The answer is so, so simple.
Look through the contacts on your phone. Find someone you've been meaning to grab a drink with. That person whose number you got at some event, promised you'd connect with, and never did. Schedule the drink. The lunch. The coffee.
Then pay attention. Watch what makes them laugh, what makes them ask follow-up questions, what makes them mad. Quietly jot it down in your notes app.
That is your content.
The most marketable thing you have is you. Find what makes you genuinely different, the thing you know an unusual amount about, and lead with that. Say something that makes a new friend lean in and ask a follow-up question.
I do this with my political content too. Once a month I grab drinks with a friend who isn't deep in the political weeds and watch closely. What grabs their attention? What actually lands? What falls flat?
Call it polling over palomas if you will.
The best content doesn't come from staring at a blank screen. It comes from real conversations with real people.
Go have one.
